I think we achieved an organic feel, even in the bigger space. When I go out on the road, I always like being in an intimate thing. I’m at an Enterprise waiting to drop my car off [laughs]. I’m not the kind of comedian that makes fun of people or teases the shirt you’re wearing, but I do like to be close enough to the audience to really get a sense of their vibe and let it inform the performance. Heroes both human and super are full of misery, depression, heartlessness. Long gone is the bright, clean palette of Christopher Reeves’ shy, nervous Superman (with concomitant romance to match), or even Tim Burton’s kooky/cheesy vision of Batman. I’m not much of a fan of the genre, but the trend is glaringly obvious: Darkness rules. “You had to ask,” eye-rolls Captain America, as another orgy of cartoon ultraviolence commences.
